Herbs for Relaxation....

Fresh herbs can be used to relax, refresh and restore those tired brain cells.

As the Greek physician Theophrastus noted, fragrant herbs have an instant healing effect as the smell travels directly from the nerves in the nose to the part of the brain concerned with intuition, emotion and creativity.

Chamomile for a calming herbal tea

Chamomile tea

One of our most favourite old garden herbs, chamomile is renowned for its sedative properties. A calming herbal tea made from the fresh flowers can relieve insomnia and digestive disorders.

Bath Tonic with Lemon Verbena

Lemon Verbena for a restorative bath

2 large handfuls fresh lemon verbena leaves

575ml (1pt) water

You don't have to sieve the infusion, but if you don't, the leaves will stick to your skin!

Place the fresh lemon verbena leaves into the saucepan of water. Cover, bring to the boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove the infusion from the heat an strain the herbs through a sieve. Add the herb infusion to a hot bath and soak away the stress!

Mint eye compress

Place 5 mint leaves in a ceramic bowl, pour over freshly boiled water, cover and allow to infuse for 10 minutes. Strain through an unbleached coffee filter paper, and leave to cool.

To reduce dark circles under the eyes, dip 2 cotton wool pads into the liquid and place on the eyelids for 10-15 minutes

Eyes are very delicate. Before use, test the solution on a tender patch of skin, such as underarm, for an allergic reaction

Remember Rosemary Tea

If you want to improve your memory and/or concentration, try adding a sprig of rosemary to a mug of water just off the boil so that you don't lose valuable plant oils by evaporation. Allow to infuse for 5-10 minutes.

Do not drink more than 2 cups of any one medicinal herb in 24 hours, unless under guidance from a qualified practitioner.

Remember rosemary tea

And of course, Lavender...

We are all familiar with Lavender's soothing and calming properties: a tea made from lavender flowers can help you sleep, or use the flowers and leaves to fill a herbal sleep sachet or pillow, or simply hang a muslin bag filled with fresh lavender sprigs under the hot water tap, and allow the hot water to run through it, so infusing the water and the air in the bathroom. As you stretch out in the bath, breathe in deeply and inhale the soothing aroma.
